Bram Stoker’s story is based on the life of Vlad Tepes/Vlad the Impaler (1431-1476), a ruler revered by Romanians for standing up to the Ottoman Empire. Well known as one of the most dreadful enemies of the Turks, Vlad Tepes started organizing the state and enforcing the law by applying death penalty and impaling all those he considered enemies. The historians nicknamed him Vlad Tepes while people say he was Count Dracula because he used to sign with his father’s name, Dracul “The Devil”. 2. Bran Castle
Peles Castle is the second most visited castle in Romania, after Bran Castle. Situated in Sinaia City, Peles castle is considered unique in Europe, thanks to its impressive architecture. It was built under Carol I reign, between 1875-1882 and used to be the summer residence for the Romanian royal family. It has important history significance, being the place where the next king of Romania, Carol II, was born. In 1953 Peles became a museum, even though people had the chance to visit it even during Carol I’s reign. The castle has a huge number of visitors every year, being admired by tourist all over the world.

3. Huniazilor Castle
Hunedoara Castle, also known as Corvinilor Castle or Huniazilor Castle is the medieval citadel of Hunedoara and one of the most important gothic architecture monuments in Romania. It is one of the most beautiful castles in the world, being included in the top 10 castles in Europe. The castle was built in the 15th century, by Ioan de Hunedoara, being also a strategically point of surveillance and a feudal residence. During the years, the visitors’ number grew considerably, nowadays being visited by thousands of tourist yearly.

4. Cantacuzino Castle
Cantacuzino Castle is located in Busteni and belonged to Cantacuzino family until 1948. After, it became a sanatorium. Today, it is a castle having a stunning collection of heraldic blazon from all the aristocratic families related with the Cantacuzinos and a series of votive paintings representing very well-known Cantacuzino figures. 5. Poienari Castle
Poienari castle is a historical monument built in the 14th century. Situated in Arges County, it was built by Vlad Tepes as a refuge or an observation point, strategically located on the top of a mountain. Also, it was the second residence of Vlad Tepes during his reign. The visitors have to climb 1480 stairs to reach the citadel, from where you can admire the beauty of Arges Valley. The amazing view is the main reason why the castle is visited by so many Romanian and foreign tourists.
6. Sturdza Castle
Located 65 km away from Iasi city, Sturdza Castle was built between 1880-1904 by George and Maria Sturdza. During the First World War, the castle was used as a military hospital, after it became a monastery and during the communism era it was a center for disabled children. After more than 10 years of renovations, in 2014 the old castle came back to life and it is expecting more and more visitors.
